One of the most critical drivers for expanding cold chain infrastructure in developing countries is the urgent need to mitigate devastating levels of food loss and wastage. In many regions, approximately 50% of perishable food is lost before it ever reaches the market, representing both an economic catastrophe and a humanitarian crisis.

Globally, the scope of this problem is staggering: 1.3 billion tonnes of food - constituting one-third of total global food production - is lost or wasted annually. This waste comes at an enormous economic cost of approximately US$750 billion each year, not accounting for the environmental and social impacts.

The absence of continuous cold chain infrastructure poses significant challenges to effective vaccine distribution, which is crucial for preventing over two million preventable deaths annually in developing countries. Without proper temperature control, life-saving vaccines lose their efficacy and become worthless.

In India alone, around 20% of temperature-sensitive healthcare products arrive damaged or degraded due to broken or insufficient cold chains. This includes approximately 25% of all vaccines, representing millions of doses that could save lives but become ineffective due to temperature exposure.
